Help Install a New Course in Vermont!
HELP INSTALL A NEW DISC GOLF COURSE AT VERGENNES UNION HIGH SCHOOL
VUHS has received approval and funding to install a basic disc golf course on the school grounds. The course is geared toward casual use for both elementary and high school students with a focus on the beginner disc golfer. A couple of folks from the local disc golf community have helped them plan this out and now is the time to install the baskets. They are putting in Discatchers with locking sleeves so the primary objective will be to get the holes dug (with a powered post hole digger) and the sleeves set in cement in each of the holes. If there is extra help we will also help assemble the baskets for installation. This is a great opportunity to help share disc golf with the next generation.
WHEN: This Sunday, Aug 29. We plan to start at 8:30am. If you can be on-time that would be great. However we expect to be working into the afternoon so if you can join us at a later time – that would be great as well.
WHERE: Vergennes Union High School (50 Monkton Road Vergennes, VT 05491). When you enter the school driveway – stay to your right and drive into the parking lot to the right (west) of the high school. We will be gathering on the near edge of the playing fields just beyond this parking lot.

Rang Duce Doubles Fundraiser for Waterbury Center Chains: Sat July 31st
So to try to keep the momentum going for new baskets at Waterbury’s Center Chains Course, Rang Duce (James Sweat) is putting together a little fund raiser.
This Saturday, July 31st at Center Chains. $20 per person ($10 to payout, $10 towards course). Meeting at 930am and start at 10am. First round stroke play (everyone plays singles), second round high/low doubles based on the first round scores (the lowest scoring person teams up with the highest scoring person and so on down the line).
Rang Duce would love to see this work and be the beginning of a series of fund raisers to improve the course (baskets, signs, tee boxes).
Rang Duce also would like to beg anyone who will listen, for some prize donations for ctp’s or ldc’s and just stuff so hopefully alot of people will get something out of it.

GMDGC Basket Sponsorship
The Center Chains Disc Golf course is trying to raise enough money to purchase new baskets. The GMDGC is in a financial position to purchase two baskets.
This is a change to the approved 2010 budget and will require a majority vote from the membership to proceed. The GMDGC has exceeded member budget by 31 members, when the cost per member is removed this leaves us with approx. $525 in unbudgeted funds. We also began the year with $1000 in operating cash. Using the unbudgeted funds plus some of our operating capital the club can afford to purchase 2 baskets for Center Chains.
Should the GMDGC commit to purchasing two baskets for the Center Chains Disc Golf Course?
Please follow this link to vote (Current GMDGC Members only please):
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/83XFTRH
Voting will be open through Sunday July 11th, at which the results will be posted.

Black Falls IV Re-Cap
50 Disc Golfers got together on a beautiful day to play Johnny Betts’ sweet courses in Montgomery, Vermont on Saturday, May 29th for the Black Falls IV Tournament.
Kicking of the only Woodchuck Cider Green Mountain Points Series “Double Points” event this year, almost every division played the longest layout of the Black Falls course: Gold Tees to the Gold Baskets. (Only the Recreation Division played from the Silver Tees to the Silver Baskets.) All divisions also played two round each on the newly opened Cherry Hill front 9, another long course with several holes clocking in at 4 par or more.
The new course did a number on a lot of players scores as did the surprise decision to have most everyone play gold to gold, but that didn’t change the winners circle much for the Pro Division. For the second year in a row, Daniel Marcus (total score 108) beat Johnny Betts (total score 116) on his own course for the first place win. And unlike the forced-to-a-tie-breaker result of last year, Daniel bests the field by a full 8 points. Here’s how the scores breakdown for the GMDGC members who competed.
| Name | Round 1 | Round 2 | Total |
| Johnny Betts | 61 | 55 | 116 |
| Chris Young | 63 | 55 | 118 |
| David Frothingham | 63 | 56 | 119 |
| Ian Thurston | 58 | 61 | 119 |
| James Sweet | 65 | 56 | 121 |
| Jeremy Becker | 65 | 57 | 122 |
| Jeff Spring | 63 | 61 | 124 |
| Todd Holmes | 71 | 56 | 127 |
| Nick Jennings | 71 | 57 | 128 |
| Josh Rappenport | 71 | 60 | 131 |
| Justin Foster | 70 | 63 | 133 |
| Johnny Nelson | 71 | 69 | 140 |

Black Falls IV This Saturday
Taken at last year’s Black Falls III Tournament
The Woodchuck Cider Green Mountain Points Series continues Saturday, May 29 at Black Falls IV.
Registration is still open. First round starts at 9:15am after an 8:30 players meeting. While it is not expected to sell-out… I wouldn’t wait to register. The Sap Bucket sold-out and it would be a shame to drive to Montgomery only to be turned away.
Divisions break down as Pro-Open $50 and all other pro divisions are $40. AM1 is $35 and all other am divisions $30. Recreation level play is $25. Prizes include Discatcher Sport, Traveler, min catchers, discs and other merchandise for all Ams levels and cash (with added cash from sponsors) payout for pros.
Lunch provided by Flicks!
And don’t forget, this year’s Black Falls features the brand new Cherry Hill front 9. Rumor has it that it play long and open, which is quite a change from the tight and short of the original Black Falls course. Can’t wait to play. Can’t wait to see you all there.
** Note: Sap Bucket VIII Re-Cap will be posted as soon as results from the Tournament are posted by the TD **
Here’s your Sap Bucket teaser…
I’ll get a post up soon about how awesome this year’s sold out Sap Bucket Open VIII was, but in the meantime, I’ve updated the bag tags. Here’s a few photos to wet your appetite:
Two Bits of News
Work Day in Waterbury
Help take care of the state’s most popular disc golf course this Saturday, May 8 in Waterbury.
With the course just re-opening after mud season last Saturday and the upcoming sold out Sap Bucket Open VIII, it is especially important that we get out there now to prepare and take care of the course. We will upgrading various teepads and will need to move a lot of gravel. We’ll be cleaning up brush and downed limbs from recent storms. And we’ll be moving lots of woodchips to improve trails.
We’d love to have you join us out there this Saturday. Please bring tools such as wheel barrows, shovels, and garden rakes with you if you have them. Do NOT bring any cutting implements such as axes or saws.
Registration for Black Falls IV is Open
After the Sold-Out Sap Bucket Open VIII, the next statewide tournament is the Black Falls Open IV up in Montgomery, Vermont. For this year’s tournament Johnny Betts has opened a brand new course just down the street from Black Falls that he’s dubbed Cherry Hill. We’ll play both courses and as always lunch will be provided by Flicks.
You can find out more and pre-register here
Don’t forget that the Sap Bucket Open Sold-Out. Don’t miss out on Black Falls IV.
GMPS First Event of the Season
Every year the Green Mountain Disc Golf Club chooses 8 Tournaments for the Green Mountain Point Series. This year the first official Point Series Tournament is also the only event held outside of Vermont.
It’s the Pinnacle Spring Run-Off held in Newport, New Hampshire. And this year, it is going to be a blast.
Contact James right away and get your place reserved. Click here for more information about this and other Tournaments this year.
The Vineyard Social VI Re-Cap
| Martha’s Vineyard Friday |
Almost 20 Vermonters went on a road trip to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts to play the 6th Vineyard Social Tournament on March 20th. For many it was the first chance to earn New England Flying Disc Association (NEFA) Points, but for everyone it was the first day of Spring and a perfect way to spend a Saturday.
And Vermonters placed well too. Chris Young and Dave Frothingham placed 9th and 16th with scores of 117 and 123 respectively. Of course Anne Lewis came in first for Female Pros with a 136. All the pros and advanced divisions played from the Red Tees in the morning and finished the day from the Blue Tees. That’s two tough courses back to back and here’s how the scores for Vermonters played out in those divisions:
| |
| Name | Round 1 | Round 2 | Total |
| Chris Young | 56 | 61 | 117 |
| Jim Conroy | 59 | 63 | 122 |
| David Frothingham | 57 | 66 | 123 |
| Chris Wilson | 61 | 63 | 124 |
| James Sweat | 59 | 66 | 125 |
| Steve Viglas | 66 | 60 | 126 |
| Josh Rappeport | 58 | 69 | 127 |
| Taylor Johnson | 63 | 66 | 129 |
| Anne Lewis | 66 | 70 | 136 |
The rest of the divisions played from the White Tees for the first round, then finished up on the Red Tees. Not easy courses, especially in the Vineyard’s windy afternoons, but definitely a break from the Blue Tees. Christian Keidel came in first for Vermont with a combined score of 116, which also landed him 2nd place for AM2. Matti-o Cohen nailed the number 3 spot with a combined 121. Here’s how the rest of the Vermonter scores breakdown.
|
|
| Name | Rd 1 | Rd 2 | Total |
| Christian Kiedel | 55 | 61 | 116 |
| Matt Cohen | 58 | 63 | 121 |
| Andrew Powell | 55 | 70 | 125 |
| Brendan Bush | 55 | 72 | 127 |
| Jon Moorer | 56 | 71 | 127 |
| Charles Chamberlain | 62 | 75 | 137 |
| Mike Clark | 63 | 74 | 137 |
| Al Rosa | 66 | 73 | 139 |

Martha’s Vineyard

Almost 20 Vermonters made the trip down to play.
Matti-o and Christian claim top tags!
Mud Season
Don’t forget! Center Chains Disc Golf Course is closed from Friday, March 12th to May 1st for mud season.
It’s important that players stay off the course during this time to protect and maintain the land. Just as we ask members to pack out our trash when we play or support local businesses like the Waterbury Center General Store, we’re asking everyone to work together with the community to keep the park healthy and beautiful. Thanks in advance for respecting this seasonal ban.
See you on the course in May!

Ice Bucket raises $3,665 on -4 temp day
The GMDGC 2010 Ice Bucket Tournament and fund raiser was a huge success raising $3,665 for the Chittenden Emergency and Waterbury Area Food Shelfs!
Thirty-seven disc golfers arrived at Waterbury Center by 9am on January 30th to brave the -4 degree temperatures for two rounds of play on the snow covered course.
It turned into a perfect day with a beautiful blue sky, lots of sun shine and not much wind. It even warmed up to a “balmy” 8 degrees mid-day. But by the end of the day, the results were clear. Anne Lewis, Pete Hess and Al Rosa we’re the big winners.
Although oddly, not one of them took home the snowboard!
More photos, winners (including who won the snowboards), and the complete scores after the jump….
Anne Lewis Wins Ice Bucket!

Anne Lewis wins the GMDGC’s 2010 Ice Bucket with the lowest two round score. Way to Go Anne!!!
$305 raised online – Can we get to $500
So far 25 Disc Golfers have pre-registered for the GMDGC Ice Bucket Tournament on Jan. 30th at Center Chains in Waterbury. The entry fee is only $20 and we’ve collected some incredible prizes for players to win. Everything from a Burton Snowboard to Skinny Pancake and Alchemist gift certificates to Sugarbush day passes and lots and lots of discs. With 20 or more players and over a dozen prizes, almost everyone will win something!!
But this isn’t just about winning cool stuff — it’s about raising a ton of dough for Vermonters most in need. The Ice Bucket is a fund raiser for the Waterbury Area Food Shelf and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. Last year we raised over $2k total between player’s fees and non-player donations. So far, we’ve raised $305 online, plus an additional $152 from a generous donor who is matching online donations 50 cents on the dollar.
Can we get the online donations to $500 by next Saturday?
CLICK HERE TO CONTRIBUTE RIGHT NOW
One way to raise money is to ask your friends and family to sponsor you just like people do for Beast Cancer awareness every year for the “Walk for the Cure.” That’s what Jeff Spring did. He pre-registered for the Ice Bucket and got 2 friends (so far) to sponsor him — raising an extra $100. Another player has 8 sponsors so far averaging $20 each.
Don’t forget that everyone who gives online is eligible to win a Burton 2010 Clash 158 snowboard too. The odds to win have never been better. Let’s get to $500 by Saturday. It’s up to us to help as many Vermonters in need as we can.
Give to the Hungry, Win a Snowboard
This year, in an effort to raise more money for those in our community who need it most, we’re raffling off a Burton 2010 Clash 158 snowboard as part of the 2010 Ice Bucket event.
And the best part – you don’t even need to brave the cold for a chance to win. Just donate $20 today and you’ll automatically be entered into the raffle. All money raised will be donated directly to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf and the Waterbury Area Food Shelf.
Please make a donation of $20 right now.
It doesn’t matter if you are going to the Ice Bucket this year or not. What matters is that we raise a ton of resources for Vermonters most in need. So not only does your donation go to help a great cause and enter you in a raffle to win a Burton snowboard, but a generous donor is offering to match 50 cents on the dollar for the first $1,000 we raise from people who aren’t playing but want to support our fund raising drive.
Don’t let this opportunity go to waste. Contribute $20 today and make a difference for those in need.
Flyer, Prizes and More!
Wow. The 2010 Ice Bucket is off to a great start. We now have a downloadable flyer available to hand out and post up. We have a bunch of prizes lined up for players to win. And the best news of all?
A generous donor is offering to match 50 cents on the dollar for the first $1,000 we raise from people who aren’t playing but want to support our fund raising drive for the Waterbury Area Food Shelf and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. This is an awesome offer and gives a real incentive for those who can’t play on Jan 30th to still support our cause.
Contribute at this link: http://gmdgc.org/ice-bucket-iv-donations/
After you contribute, pass the link on to friends, family, co-workers, and other disc golfers. These charities do great work and the always need our support. Help make this drive a huge success and get the word out.
And since the point of the player prizes is to encourage turnout and increase how much we raise for those in need, as an extra incentive to give the GMDGC will reserve one of our donated prizes for a raffle for those that donate a minimum $20 and cannot come play.
There’s more…
The 2010 Ice Bucket!!
It’s official! The Green Mountain Disc Golf Club’s Ice Bucket Tournament and Fund Raiser returns for 2010.
This full day of fun in the snow is a great way to kick off the new year AND raise some serious support for those in need in our communities. Last year’s Ice Bucket raised $2,288 for the Waterbury Area Food Shelf. This year, we’re aiming high and will contribute 100% of the proceeds to TWO, count ‘em, TWO local charities: The Waterbury Area Food Shelf and The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. Come one! Come All! It’s for a good cause!
