It's important that players stay off the course during this time to protect and maintain the land. Thanks in advance for respecting this seasonal ban.

The GMDGC 2010 Ice Bucket Tournament and fund raiser was a huge success raising $3,665 for the Chittenden Emergency and Waterbury Area Food Shelfs!

Thirty-seven disc golfers arrived at Waterbury Center by 9am on January 30th to brave the -4 degree temperatures for two rounds of play on the snow covered course.

It turned into a perfect day with a beautiful blue sky, lots of sun shine and not much wind. It even warmed up to a "balmy" 8 degrees mid-day. But by the end of the day, the results were clear. Anne Lewis, Pete Hess and Al Rosa we're the big winners.

Although oddly, not one of them took home the snowboard!

More photos, winners (including who won the snowboards), and the complete scores after the jump....

It even warmed up to a “balmy” 8 degrees mid-day. But by the end of the day, the results were clear. Anne Lewis, Pete Hess and Al Rosa we’re the big winners.

Although oddly, not one of them took home the snowboard!

THE WINNERS!

Overall Winner of the 2010 Ice Bucket – Anne Lewis with a total cumulative score of 86. Coming in 5th in the first round and first in the second round worked out for a big win.

First Round: Singles. Pete Hess with a 41! Everyone played from the white tees. Players were encouraged to purchase “mulligans” in advance for $1 each (it’s for charity!!) and use as many as they want on any throw during the round. Rumor has it that Pete spent 10 on one hole alone. It worked out well for Pete since he won and Vermonters most-in-need thank him for his generosity.

Second Round: High/Low Best/Worst Disc Doubles. Anne Lewis and Al Rosa got 13 under par also, with a 41! Players were matched up based on the results from the first round. Highest score player with the lowest score player, then the second highest with the second lowest, and so on. Half the holes during the round are called Best Disc holes. After each player throws their tee shot, players on the same team decide which of the team’s throws was best and then throw their next shot from there. The other half are Worst Disc holes. After each player throws their tee shot, players from the other team decide on the team’s worst throw and make the team throw their next shot from there. In other words, not easy.

There was one three-person team for doubles this year and rumor has it they spent 50 mulligans (hey, it’s for charity!) to come in with a 46. Alright, it’s not a rumor. My team spent 50 mulligans… and I used 14 of them on one “tin cup” putt that was a maximum of 20 feet. I’ll admit it.

Everybody Wins! Thanks to our incredible sponsors every single player who came out to brave the cold won something! Players chose their prize in the order they placed overall.

The GMDGC thanks the Skinny Pancake, Waterbury Center Gen. Store, Magic Hat, Disc Caddie, Dave Jackson, Starbucks, Johnny Betts, 10Down Disc Golf, The Alchemist, Mad River Glen Ski Resort, Albin Family Foundation, Sugarbush Ski Resort, Sunflower Natural Foods, Haloran’s True Value, Umiak Outdoor Outfitters, Todd Holmes & Marshall Street Disc Golf, Burton, Matt Morro and Smuggs Ski Resort, City Market (Onion River Food Co-Op), The Cheese Outlet Fresh Market, 3 Penny Tap Room, and Onion River Sports in Montpelier for their generous donations!

Raffle Winner for the Burton 2010 Clash Snowboard: Jed Hock who donated $20 online when he realized he wasn’t going to be able to make it out to play.

Winner of the Burton 2010 Blunt Snowboard: Christian Keidel

Christian takes 8th place and Wins the Snowboard

THE MONEY!!

The event raised real money for the Waterbury Area Food Shelf and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf and 20 pounds of food. Our total haul came out to $3,665, which is likely to put Vermont in the top 10 of official Ice Bowl fund raisers around the country this year. And it wasn’t just the players who showed up who brought in the donations. Jeff Spring for example not only contributed for himself, he got three other people he knew to sponsor him and donate too. Jed Hock won the raffle after donating online once he realized he wasn’t going to be able to play.

Here’s how it broke down:

$1420 raised day of from 37 total participants
$780 from the Albin Family Foundation ($1000 – $220 donated to player’s lunch at the Waterbury General Store).
$965 in online donations and player sponsorships
$500 from anonymous donor who match online donation at 50% and then rounded up
———————–
$3665 total

And don’t forget, Starbucks donated 10 pounds of coffee to each of the two food shelfs. Great work by the whole GMDGC team.

And did I mention it was a beautiful day? For the full results click here. For more photos click here.

So far 25 Disc Golfers have pre-registered for the GMDGC Ice Bucket Tournament on Jan. 30th at Center Chains in Waterbury. The entry fee is only $20 and we've collected some incredible prizes for players to win. Everything from a Burton Snowboard to Skinny Pancake and Alchemist gift certificates to Sugarbush day passes and lots and lots of discs. With 20 or more players and over a dozen prizes, almost everyone will win something!!

But this isn't just about winning cool stuff -- it's about raising a ton of dough for Vermonters most in need. The Ice Bucket is a fund raiser for the Waterbury Area Food Shelf and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. Last year we raised over $2k total between player's fees and non-player donations. So far, we've raised $305 online, plus an additional $152 from a generous donor who is matching online donations 50 cents on the dollar.

Can we get the online donations to $500 by next Saturday?
CLICK HERE TO CONTRIBUTE RIGHT NOW

One way to raise money is to ask your friends and family to sponsor you just like people do for Beast Cancer awareness every year for the "Walk for the Cure." That's what Jeff Spring did. He pre-registered for the Ice Bucket and got 2 friends (so far) to sponsor him -- raising an extra $100. Another player has 8 sponsors so far averaging $20 each.

Don't forget that everyone who gives online is eligible to win a Burton 2010 Clash 158 snowboard too. The odds to win have never been better. Let's get to $500 by Saturday. It's up to us to help as many Vermonters in need as we can.

And since the point of the player prizes is to encourage turnout and increase how much we raise for those in need, as an extra incentive to give the GMDGC will reserve one of our donated prizes for a raffle for those that donate a minimum $20 and cannot come play.

MORE PRIZES FOR PLAYERS:

Several new sponsors are donating great prizes for players. Right now, there are 13 people registered and 8 sponsors. Some of the sponsors are donating multiple gifts. That means a lot of players are going to win. And check out some of these cool prizes lined up by Club Members:

Skinny Pancake : $20 Gift Cert.
Waterbury Center Bakery and General Store : Discs, Discs, Discs!
Magic Hat: 2 Magic Hat stamped Drivers, 1 Magic Hat stamped Putter, bottle opener, key chain, tin sign, and 2 T-shirts
Disc Caddie: Prize Packs
Starbucks: Player Prize Package of Tazo Tea Assortment and 4 Toki Tea Mugs
Black Falls Disc Golf Course: 2010 Season Pass
10Down Disc Golf: Merchandise

And Starbucks is also making a donation of 10 lbs. of Starbucks coffee to the Waterbury Area Food Shelf and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.

That was a great score. Thanks to everyone who has helped raise prize for players. What else can we raise gang? The more prizes we have the more golfers are likely to bare the cold to play. And since the rules only allow one award per person, it would be great to have a prize for every player. The more players we get, the more money we raise for charity. Everybody wins! If you can donate a prize or get one donated, please contact Chris Young at chriskyoung@hotmail.com and let him know.

DOWNLOAD THE FLYER!

And did I mention that we now have a really great flyer you can download and print out. You can hand it out to friends, post it at work, or even post it around town. The more people hear about this the better. It’s for a great cause and we need you to spread the word. You can download it by clicking here.

The 2010 GMDGC Ice Bucket
Saturday, January 30th
Center Chains Disc Golf Course
Waterbury Center, VT
Players Meeting at 8:30 – Tee off at 9!

The Ice Bucket is unlike any other GMDGC Tournament so I’m going to go into extended detail below to make sure everyone knows how this event works.

Let’s do this in a Q and A format shall we?

Q: What’s the format for this year’s event?
A: The first round of disc golf will be Singles Play from the White Tees. The second round of golf will be High/Low Best/Worst Disc Doubles from the White Tees.

Q: What is Singles Play from the White Tees mean?
A: Ah… this is pretty straight forward. Don’t ask dumb questions.

Q: What is High/Low Best/Worst Disc Doubles mean?
A: That’s a great question, thank you. Doubles means that players will be matched up in teams of two for the round. High/Low refers to the ranking from the first round of singles play. So, the 1st place golfer (that’s the person with the lowest score from the first round) will be teamed up with the last place golfer (that’s the person with the highest score from the first round). The next team will feature the 2nd best and the 2nd worst together and so on and so on until all teams are chosen.

Q: Great, but you didn’t explain what Best/Worst Disc means?
A: I was getting to that. Don’t interrupt. Best/Worst Disc refers to which of the discs each team plays from after their tee shot. The Best Disc portion of the round will be played on the odd numbered holes (that’s 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15, & 17). For these holes, after the tee shot, your team chooses which of your two discs to play from for the next shot. Then both players throw from your chosen disc and it continues until one of your team’s discs gets in the basket. The Worst Disc portion of the round will be played on the even numbered holes (that’s 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16, & 18). For these holes, after your tee shot, your opponent’s team chooses which of your two disc you’ll play from for the next shot and that continues until BOTH of your team’s discs get in the basket. That’s right, on Worst Disc holes, both team members have to make the final putt otherwise the worst disc is on the ground and therefore not in the basket.

Q: I know this is a fund raiser, but how much does it cost?
A: The entry fee is $20. That’s all you need to pay to play. But, unlike any other GMDGC tournament, at the Ice Bucket you can buy Mulligans in advance. Mulligans are $1 each for the first round and $2 each for the second round.

Q: That’s a great price, but do you have any special deals?
A: Funny you should ask, we do. We have the Generous Golfer Package that gets you: 1 Entry Fee, 18 first round mulligans, 18 second round mulligans, and two handiheats for just $50 <—- that saves you at least $24 bucks!!! and you get the handiheats to keep your hands warm. You can’t show me a better deal.

Q: Will there be any cool prizes?
A: There most certainly will be. Right off the bat, we have confirmed donations from the Skinny Pancake Restaurant (a $20 gift certificate) and the Waterbury Center Bakery and General Store (Discs, Discs, Discs). Check out this thread for updates on new sponsors and donations as we get them.

Last year, prizes included donations from The Albin Family Foundation (Hot Lunch for all plus a generous cash donation to the Food Shelf), The Alchemist (2 $25 gift certificates), Magic Hat (2 Fleece vests, 2 Tee Shirts and 2 hats), Mad River Glen (2 x 2-day lift passes and 2 MRG brand T-shirts), Marker (6 pairs of Ski Goggles), Prime Discs (6 Prime minis, 4 Prime water bottles, 2 Prime Ts, 2 VO Surges), Onion River Sports ($25 Gift Certificate), Jimmz Pizza ($20 Gift Certificate), Rock Art (2 Discs), EESA Clothing(6 pairs of socks and 12 bandanas) and a few more. This year is likely to shape us just as good and if we work together, we might be able to make it even bigger.

If you want to reach out to a potential sponsor or are a potential sponsor who wants to donate, please contact either Pete Hess at pch3@cornell.edu or Chris Young at chriskyoung@hotmail.com

Q: Anything else I should know about the prizes?
A: Yeah, you can only win once. So if you when something in the first round, the only prize you’ll get in the second round is pride (however, if the other member of the double team hasn’t won anything yet, they’ll still get a prize.) This is done to spread out the good cheer at this awesome charity event. So no whining.

Q: This sounds fantastic! How do I register?

A: Excellent. Do it now. Post a comment on this thread in the GMDGC forum or send an email Chris Young at chriskyoung@hotmail.com

Q: How do I pre-pay?
A: Pete Hess is the Tournament Director for the event this year and he has asked that everyone please pay at the event. So, no need to pre-pay, just show up with your cash or check and Pete will gladly check you in. But please don’t forget to let us know you are coming — so we can make sure there is enough food and prizes — by adding a comment on this thread or emailing Chris Young at chriskyoung@hotmail.com

Q: I can’t go, but I still want to support the GMDGC’s fund raising drive. How can I give?
A: AWESOME! You are a true member of the local disc golf community. Thank you! Click here to contribute directly to the event.

Q: What is a “Mulligan?”
A: Where have you been living for the last decade? Here is what wikipedia says about Mulligans: A mulligan, in a game, happens when a player gets a second chance to perform a certain move or action. The practice is also sometimes referred to as a “do over.”

In the Ice Bucket – Mulligans are good for just about anything anywhere anytime. So Yes, any of your throws including the 4 foot putt that you miss because you are standing on the ribbon taped to your disc or the time you decided it would be fun to try a tomahawk on Hole 12 and your disc never hit the ground. And yes, you can use 5 on one hole, or on one “throw” for that matter… think Tin Cup.

Q: Why would I want to buy a mulligan?
A: Did I mention there are all sorts of cool prizes? Also, did you read above how the doubles round will be played? On the Worst Disc holes, your opponents are going to try and screw you. Mulligans will help with that they’re good for anything. Really, please pay attention. Besides, if not for your score, buy some for charity.

Q: How many mulligans can I buy?
A: You can purchase as many mulligans as you wish. I hear, Frothy usually gets 4 a hole, so don’t plan to be shy. It’s for charity, so there’s no need for pride.

Q: Will the 2010 GMDGC Bag Tags be ready in time for the event?
A: That’s the plan. The 2010 Bag Tags will be unveiled during the Award Ceremony after the second round. The Tags will be handed out in order of best to worst scores from the first round. The remaining bag tags will be handed out to GMDGC members in the order members sign up. So don’t forget to renew your membership or join for the first time online here.

Q: I have more question, how do I get them answered?
A: Ask them in the comments below or in the comments on this thread and one of us will answer it as soon as possible.
